Terms from the adult industry, explained
On set, in the contract and on the statement you will meet terms that nobody explains and that still decide money and rights. They are listed here — from buyout and usage rights to the day rate, each with what it actually means for you.
A
- Account Ownership Marketing and platform
- The question of who legally and actually owns an account on a fan platform, and who controls the login details, payout account, and fans.
- Additional Income Money and taxes
- Income earned alongside social benefits such as citizen’s allowance, which is partially taken into account against the benefit after allowances have been deducted.
- Additional Meal Allowance Money and taxes
- A tax allowance for additional meal expenses incurred during work-related absences, staggered according to the duration of the absence and replacing receipts for meals.
- Advance Payment Safety and consent
- A payment demanded before any service is provided and, in casting, almost always an indication that the offer is illegitimate.
- Affiliate Marketing and platform
- An affiliate program in which you receive a commission for referred customers or newly recruited creators through a personal referral link.
- Aftercare
- The planned follow-up after a shoot that accompanies the transition out of the scene and back into ordinary life.
- Age verification
- The documented check of legal age by identity card or passport that every serious production requires before the first shoot day.

- The technical check platforms use to ensure that audiences and creators are of legal age before content can be viewed or offered.
- Agency Agreement Contract and law
- The agreement on ongoing cooperation with an agency, setting out the tasks, remuneration, powers of attorney, and term of the representation.
- Agency commission
- The fee an agency receives for arranging a booking, which in serious work is paid by the production, not the performer.
- Amateur Production Roles and formats
- A production with a small team, basic equipment and a limited budget, where the contract, identity verification and rights clearance must nevertheless be complete.
- Ancillary copyright Contract and law
- The performer's own right in their performance, on which the granting of rights in the model contract between performer and production is based.
- Artists’ Social Insurance Fund Money and taxes
- The institution that admits self-employed artists and publicists to statutory health, long-term care and pension insurance and subsidizes their contributions.
B
- B-Roll
- Extra material beside the main takes — detail shots, transitions and atmosphere — that has to be covered separately by the usage rights.
- Basic tax allowance Money and taxes
- The portion of annual taxable income on which no income tax is charged and which is regularly adjusted to the subsistence minimum.
- Behind the Scenes
- Recordings of the shoot itself, which often show faces and situations nobody had intended for publication.
- Booking Production and set
- A booking is the binding booking for a shooting day with a fixed date, location, format, and fee, which both parties confirm in writing.
- Boundary Violation Safety and consent
- Any act on set or in the context of a production that goes beyond what was agreed or occurs without the affected person’s current consent.
- Break Policy Production and set
- The break policy specifies when and for how long work is interrupted during a shooting day so that performers can eat, drink and recover.
- Brokerage Agreement Contract and law
- An agreement under which someone arranges the conclusion of a contract in return for success-based remuneration, such as a booking between you and a production.
- Business expense
- A professionally caused expense that reduces taxable profit and has to be provable by a receipt to be recognised.
- Business Registration Money and taxes
- The notification of a commercial activity to the trade office of your municipality, which is necessary if your work in front of the camera is not considered freelance.
- Buyout
- A one-off payment with which a production permanently acquires the usage rights in the recordings as described in the contract.
C
- Call Sheet
- The day's disposition of a production: a sheet that records location, times, people involved and the planned scenes for a single shoot day.
- Callback Production and set
- A callback is a second invitation after the initial casting, through which a production selects its shortlist for a specific role.
- Camera Production and set
- On set, the camera refers both to the recording device and to the person operating it and deciding what appears in the frame and in which composition.
- Cancellation Fee Money and taxes
- A payment agreed in advance that becomes due when the production cancels, postpones, or ends a booked shooting day early at short notice.
- Cash-basis profit calculation
- The simple profit calculation for the self-employed: business income minus business expenses gives the profit of a calendar year.
- Casting Production and set
- A casting is the selection process used by an agency or production to determine whether an applicant is suitable for a format.
- Casting Appointment Production and set
- The casting appointment is the in-person meeting at the studio or a booked location where the agency or production gets to know you.
- Chargeback Money and taxes
- A reversal of a payment initiated by the cardholder through their bank, which platforms often deduct again from the Creator’s balance.
- Chatter Marketing and platform
- A person who writes messages to paying fans on behalf of a creator, usually working for an agency and receiving a share of the revenue.
- Check-in Safety and consent
- A brief check-in during filming in which everyone involved confirms that they still consent to the next step.
- Clip Store Marketing and platform
- An online shop where individual videos are offered for purchase and which handles payment, hosting, and delivery in exchange for a share of the revenue.
- Collaboration Marketing and platform
- A joint production involving multiple creators that appears on all participating channels and shifts all production responsibilities to the participants.
- Commercial Register Contract and law
- The public register of registered companies, listing their company name, registered office, legal form and authorized representatives, which anyone can view online.
- Community Guidelines Marketing and platform
- The content rules of a platform that determine what may be published and what consequences may result from violations.
- Complaints Procedure Safety and consent
- The established process for reporting problems during a casting or shoot, from the designated contact person on set to the agency.
- Condom Requirement Safety and consent
- The binding rule that condoms must be used without exception during vaginal and anal sex in front of the camera.
- Confidentiality clause
- A contractual duty not to pass on a production's internals — it must not, however, stop you reporting a crime or taking legal advice.
- Consent
- The informed, voluntary and at any time withdrawable agreement to every single act in front of the camera.
- Consent declaration
- The data-protection permission for a production to process image, sound and other personal data for specified purposes.
- Content Creator Marketing and platform
- A person who plans, produces and markets their own content, combining performance, production and distribution in one role.
- Content Plan Marketing and platform
- An overview of which content appears when and on which channel, so production, publication, and boundaries can remain plannable over several weeks.
- Continuity
- The visible match between setups: hair, clothing, jewellery and position have to fit across separately shot takes.
- Contractual penalty
- An amount fixed in the contract in advance that becomes due if a named duty is breached, without anyone having to prove a loss.
- Cookie Consent Contract and law
- The consent that websites must obtain before setting non-essential cookies and that you can reject or withdraw just as easily at any time.
- Copyright Contract and law
- The rights in personal intellectual creations such as films and photos, which in productions usually belong to the director, camera operator and editor, not the performers.
- Counselling Centre Safety and consent
- An independent point of contact that provides performers with confidential advice on violence, health, contracts or leaving the industry.
- Couple Production Roles and formats
- A production with two participants who are also a couple in private, involving specific questions about separate contracts, boundaries, and rights to the material.
- Creator Agency Marketing and platform
- A service provider that manages creators’ fan-platform accounts, including marketing, chat, and strategy, and receives a share of the revenue in return.
- Creator Verification Marketing and platform
- The identity and age check required by a platform before someone is allowed to publish their own content or earn money there.
- Credit Note Money and taxes
- A statement issued not by you as the service provider, but by your client, such as a platform, which may qualify as an invoice for tax purposes.
- Cross-Promotion Marketing and platform
- Mutual promotion between two or more creators in which each side directs its audience to the other’s profile.
- Custom Video
- A commissioned production for a single customer that is created to their brief and is fixed in writing before it is made.
- Cut
- The command that stops a running take at once: direction gives it for professional reasons, performers at any time and without a reason.
D
- Day rate
- The fee agreed in advance for a complete shoot day, regardless of how many scenes or motifs arise that day.
- Debriefing Safety and consent
- A short, structured post-shoot discussion in which the process, agreements and open questions are reviewed together.
- Deepfake Safety and consent
- An image or video created or altered using artificial intelligence that shows a person in a situation that never existed.
- Digitals Production and set
- Unmade-up, unretouched photos in natural light that agencies and productions use to see what a person actually looks like.
- Direction
- The content lead on set: direction decides on framing, process and repeats, not on the performers' limits.
- DMCA Complaint Contract and law
- A formal notice under U.S. copyright law by which rights holders ask platforms and hosts to remove copied material.
- Documentation Obligation Contract and law
- The obligation of a production to verifiably record and securely store the identity, legal age, and consent of everyone involved.
- Doxxing Safety and consent
- The deliberate research and publication of private data such as a legal name, address or employer against the will of the person concerned.
- Duo
- A production form with two performers in which tests, matching of limits and the process arrangement have to be settled before the booking.
E
- Emergency Contact Safety and consent
- A person you trust who knows where you are during a casting or shoot and can be reached in an emergency.
- Erotic Photography Roles and formats
- A photographic genre that stages the body and charisma through light, posing, and visual language, ranging from clothed portraits to nude images.
- Event Escorting Roles and formats
- A paid engagement at an event as a hostess, host, or companion, explicitly without sexual acts and with €200 to €500 per day.
- Exclusive contract
- A contract that binds you to one production for a period and excludes shoots for others and often your own publications as well.
- Expenses
- Additional costs around a shoot day such as travel, overnight stay and meals, whose assumption has to be settled before you accept.
- Exploitation rights
- The economic use of the recordings by the rights holder: distribution, licensing to third parties, compilations and reuse.
- Extra Roles and formats
- A person visible in the background of a scene, without dialogue or an individual action, usually with a short period of work and a flat fee.
F
- Fake Casting Safety and consent
- A staged casting with no real production behind it, intended to defraud people of money, recordings, or sexual acts.
- False self-employment
- A formally self-employed activity that is in fact dependent employment because instruction and integration predominate.
- Family insurance Money and taxes
- Contribution-free coverage of children and spouses under a statutory health insurance plan, which ends when their own income is too high.
- Fan platform
- A portal on which you offer your own content against a subscription or individual purchase and thereby earn independently of commissioned shoots.
- Feature Production Roles and formats
- An elaborate production with a storyline, script and several shooting days, in which acted scenes with dialogue make up a large part of the work.
- Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) Money and taxes
- State education funding for university and vocational training, where personal income above an allowance reduces the funding and must be reported.
- Fee Agreement Money and taxes
- The agreement that records how much you receive for a service, what this amount covers, when it is due and how it will be paid.
- Filming Agreement Safety and consent
- A written agreement made before filming that records the agreed and excluded content as well as the conditions on set and is confirmed by both parties.
- Framework Agreement Contract and law
- A basic agreement that sets the conditions for multiple future shoots, while each individual date is agreed and confirmed separately.
G
- GDPR Contract and law
- The European General Data Protection Regulation governs how agencies, productions, and platforms may handle your personal data.
- Geoblocking
- The technical block that makes a title available only in certain countries and can be agreed in the contract as a territorial exclusion.
- Group scene
- A production form with several people involved that brings longer shoot days, more waiting time and a clearly higher coordination effort.
H
- Hair and makeup
- Hair and makeup on the shoot day: a separate work step before shooting that is continuously retouched between takes.
- Half-day fee
- The fee for a shortened engagement of usually four to five hours, which for good reason sits above half a full day rate.
- Hardcore Roles and formats
- A production format featuring actual sexual intercourse, which entails stricter health, contract and distribution rules than Softcore.
- Health Insurance Money and taxes
- The mandatory coverage for illness in Germany, which self-employed performers must organize and pay for themselves, either through statutory or private insurance.
I
- ID-Shot
- A short recording in which the performer holds their ID document to the camera, so that person, document and shoot can be matched.
- Image-Based Abuse Safety and consent
- A collective term for abuse involving intimate images: secretly recording, sharing without consent, threatening publication, and fabricating images.
- Implied Nude Roles and formats
- A type of production in which nudity is implied but not shown because hands, fabrics, props, or the framing cover the intimate areas.
- Initial Interview Production and set
- The first personal conversation between an applicant and an agency, usually by video or phone, in which expectations, boundaries and the process are clarified before any casting.
- Interview Format Roles and formats
- A production format in which you answer questions in front of the camera about your work or yourself, often revealing more personal information than in a scene.
- Intimacy Coordinator
- An independent specialist on set who prepares and choreographs intimate scenes and watches over the limits of the people involved.
- Invoice Money and taxes
- The document you use to invoice the client for your work after an assignment, which must contain certain mandatory information so that the tax office and the client accept it.
J
- Jurisdiction Contract and law
- The designation of which court has territorial jurisdiction when a legal dispute arises from a contract with a production company, agency, or platform.
L
- Lead role
- The role that carries a production: longest engagement on set, highest visibility in the finished material and the fee in the upper part of the span.
- Leak Safety and consent
- The unauthorized publication of recordings or data that should not be public, or should not be public in that place, such as paid content or raw footage.
- Legal Notice Requirement Contract and law
- The legal obligation to state the provider’s name and serviceable address in an easily accessible location on commercial websites and profiles.
- License Contract and law
- The contractually granted permission to use a protected right, such as displaying recordings on a platform, without becoming the rights holder yourself.
- Lighting Production and set
- Lighting includes lamps, light modifiers, and the people who use them to determine how the space and performers appear bright, dark, and colorful in the image.
- Link in Bio Marketing and platform
- The single link in the profile text of a social network that Creators use to direct their audience to their paid content or a link collection.
- Livestream Roles and formats
- A live broadcast on a platform where the audience watches and reacts in real time, and nothing can be edited afterward.
- Location
- A place booked for the shoot outside the studio; serious productions work there or in the studio, never in private flats.
- Location Management Production and set
- Location management organizes the workflow on set itself and is your first point of contact on the shooting day for times, rooms, and breaks.
- Loverboy method Safety and consent
- A manipulation strategy in which a perpetrator pretends to be in a romantic relationship in order to pressure and exploit their victim into sex work.
M
- Media Kit Marketing and platform
- A compact presentation with a profile, key figures and offers that Creators can send to potential advertising and collaboration partners.
- Metadata Safety and consent
- Additional information stored in photo, video, and text files that may reveal the recording location, time, device, or names.
- Minijob Money and taxes
- A marginal part-time job with an earnings limit and flat-rate contributions, which fundamentally differs from an independent individual contract as a performer.
- Model Agency Production and set
- A company that places models with clients, organizes bookings, and receives a commission for doing so, ideally from the client rather than the model.
- Model contract
- The written agreement between production and performer that fixes performance, fee, usage rights and limits of a shoot.
- Model Release
- The consent to publication of the recordings: it does not regulate the work on set, but the exploitation of the material afterwards.
- Mutual consent
- The German legal term for the requirement that every sexual act is carried by the recognisable will of everyone involved.
N
- Name attribution Contract and law
- The naming of a contributor in a publication, where what matters most to performers is whether a stage name, real name, or no name at all appears.
- No-List
- The separately kept list of acts that are excluded for you and are not negotiated.
- Non-compete clause Contract and law
- A contractual clause that prohibits you from working for competitors or competing independently during or after the collaboration.
- Non-Nude Roles and formats
- A production format without visible nudity, in which clothing, framing, and visibility limits are bindingly defined in the contract beforehand.
- Notice Period Contract and law
- The period between receipt of a termination notice and the actual end of the contract, particularly important for agency, framework, and exclusive contracts.
O
- On-Set Etiquette Production and set
- On-set etiquette encompasses the written and unwritten rules of conduct at the filming location that ensure respect, focus, and safety for everyone involved.
- Option Production and set
- An option is a provisional reservation that allows a production to hold a date for you without booking you bindingly yet.
- Overtime provisions Money and taxes
- The contract clause that specifies when an extended shooting day counts as overtime, how it is paid, and who must agree to the extension.
P
- Pay-per-View Marketing and platform
- A sales model in which individual pieces of content are unlocked for a fixed price, regardless of whether a subscription exists.
- Payment due date Money and taxes
- The agreed period within which a fee must be paid after filming or invoicing; through this agency, payment is made by bank transfer within 14 days.
- Payment Reminder Money and taxes
- The clear request to a defaulting client to pay an overdue fee, which generally places the client in default of payment.
- Payout interval
- The rhythm in which a platform transfers earned credit, and often the more decisive factor for your liquidity than the rate.
- Payout rate
- The percentage share of the turnover achieved that a platform pays out to the creator; the range runs from 25 to 90 percent.
- Paywall Marketing and platform
- A technical paywall that makes content visible only to paying users, thereby separating advertising from goods for sale.
- Personality rights Contract and law
- The right derived from the Basic Law to decide for yourself how your own person, your own name and your intimate life are portrayed.
- Photo Production Roles and formats
- A production of still images instead of moving images, with a smaller team, a calmer workflow and a fee of between 250 and 600 euros per shooting day.
- Piracy Marketing and platform
- The unauthorized copying and distribution of paid content on third-party sites, in forums or groups, without the consent of the rights holders.
- Pixelation Safety and consent
- Making faces, tattoos, or surroundings unrecognizable in images and video using pixels or blur, which increases anonymity but does not guarantee it.
- Post-production Production and set
- Post-production includes all work steps after filming in which the recorded material is turned into the finished video or photo set ready for publication.
- POV
- A recording form in which the camera takes the viewpoint of a person involved and is usually operated by that person themselves.
- Power Imbalance Safety and consent
- The unequal relationship between the production and performers that arises when one side controls bookings, money, location, and the process.
- PrEP Safety and consent
- PrEP is medically supervised prevention with medication against HIV infection, but it never replaces the condom requirement on set.
- Production Management Production and set
- Production management is responsible for the budget, contracts, schedule, and accounting of a production and is your point of contact for money and organization.
- Props
- Every object that appears in the picture or is used in the scene; it is supplied by the production and not by the performers.
R
- Raw Footage Production and set
- Raw footage is the entirety of all unedited recordings from a shoot day, including failed takes, breaks, and scenes that are never published.
- Reach Marketing and platform
- The number of people who actually get to see your content, as distinct from the mere number of followers on a profile.
- Renegotiation Safety and consent
- The attempt to change previously agreed content, boundaries, rights, or fees afterward, often shortly before or during the shoot.
- Retention obligation Money and taxes
- The statutory obligation to keep invoices, receipts, and business records organized and legible for several years, including in digital form.
- Revenue share Money and taxes
- Compensation in which, instead of or in addition to a fixed fee, you receive an agreed percentage of the revenue generated through your work.
- Reverse Charge Money and taxes
- A procedure in which the business recipient, rather than the supplier, is liable for VAT, typically for assignments across national borders.
- Reverse Image Search Safety and consent
- A search in which an image is entered instead of a search term in order to find identical or similar images and the pages on which they appear.
- Right of access Contract and law
- The right under the GDPR to find out from any company, free of charge, which personal data it stores about you, why it stores it and to whom it shares it.
- Right of withdrawal
- The right to withdraw a data-protection consent, which usually leaves the usage rights granted by contract in finished material untouched.
- Right to erasure Contract and law
- The right to demand that an agency, production company, or platform remove your data or content when there is no longer a legal basis for keeping it.
- Right to one’s own image
- The right to decide for yourself whether pictures of you may be distributed or shown in public.
- Right to stop
- The right to end a running shoot at any time and without a reason, regardless of how far the production has progressed.
S
- Safeword
- A word agreed in advance that ends the running take at once, without anyone asking for the reason.
- Script
- In erotic productions usually a rundown rather than a dialogue book: it records which scenes arise in which order and with which content.
- Secondary Employment Contract and law
- Any work alongside a primary job or apprenticeship that employees are generally allowed to do but often have to report to their employer.
- Secondary Exploitation Contract and law
- Any commercial use of recordings beyond their initial release, for example on additional platforms, in compilations or abroad.
- Sedcard
- The compact working document with which an agency presents you to productions: stage name, key data, region and a few telling pictures.
- Self-employed professional Money and taxes
- Self-employed individuals whose activity is recognized for tax purposes as a liberal profession, who do not have to register a business and do not pay trade tax.
- Self-Employment as a Side Job Money and taxes
- Self-employed work carried out alongside university, vocational training or a primary job, while remaining secondary in terms of time and income.
- Set
- The shoot site as a workplace with regulated access: who may be present during a take is an arrangement and not a question of courtesy.
- Severability Clause Contract and law
- A concluding provision stating that the rest of a contract remains valid if individual provisions prove to be invalid.
- Sextortion Safety and consent
- Blackmail using real or fake intimate recordings to force someone to pay money, provide additional material, or perform sexual acts.
- Shadowban Marketing and platform
- A quiet restriction on visibility where an account can continue posting, but its content is barely shown to new people anymore.
- Shoot day
- The billing unit of the industry: a working day on a production, paid with a day rate and independent of how much material arose.
- Shooting Schedule Production and set
- The shooting schedule sets out on which day, at which location and in what order the scenes of a production will be filmed, as well as who is needed for each one.
- Shot Production and set
- A shot is an uninterrupted image frame with a set camera position, focal length, and perspective, from which a scene is assembled.
- Shotlist Production and set
- The shotlist is the organized list of all shots to be recorded on a shooting day, including framing, content, and usually the planned order.
- Small-business VAT scheme
- A choice in VAT law: no VAT on your invoices, but also no deduction of input VAT paid.
- Softcore
- A production form without explicit depiction that opens other exploitation paths and therefore works with other usage rights and fee structures.
- Solo
- A production form with a single performing person, the smallest crew, usually a short shoot day and no coordination with scene partners.
- Sound Production and set
- Sound encompasses audio recording on set and the person who positions microphones, monitors levels, and ensures that speech is intelligible in the footage.
- Special Categories of Personal Data Contract and law
- Particularly protected data under the GDPR, such as information about health, sex life and biometrics, which may only be processed under strict conditions.
- Stage name
- The name under which you are published, and the most important tool for separating work and private life.
- Stand-in Production and set
- A stand-in is a substitute who takes a performer’s position while the lighting and camera are being set up, so the performer does not have to wait during that time.
- STI-Panel
- A bundled laboratory test for sexually transmitted infections whose result has to be available on the shoot day.
- Studio Production Roles and formats
- A production by an established studio with a permanent team, a written shooting schedule, and clearly assigned responsibilities, usually with broad rights.
- Sublicense Contract and law
- A license that a licensee passes on to third parties, causing recordings to end up with providers you never signed a contract with.
- Subscription Marketing and platform
- A payment model in which customers regularly pay a fixed amount and in return receive access to the content made available on a profile.
- Supporting role
- A time-limited engagement with less picture share, usually in the lower part of the fee span and often the first path into a production.
T
- Take
- A single recording pass from the start of the camera to the stop; a finished scene almost always arises from several of them.
- Takedown Contract and law
- The removal of content from a website or platform after an authorized party has notified the operator of a legal infringement.
- Tax number Money and taxes
- The number under which your responsible tax office registers your self-employed activity and which belongs on every invoice unless another number is used.
- Tax Prepayments Money and taxes
- Payments set by the tax office toward the expected tax for the current year, which self-employed people make quarterly before the tax assessment has been issued.
- Tax Reserve Money and taxes
- A fixed portion of every payment that self-employed people set aside separately so they can pay later tax and contribution claims without a cash-flow shortfall.
- Teaser Marketing and platform
- A short, deliberately incomplete excerpt that sparks interest in a paid offering and must comply with the rules of the channel where it appears.
- Test Certificate Safety and consent
- The document you use on the shoot day to prove that your test result for sexually transmitted infections is current and complete.
- Test shoot Production and set
- A test shoot consists of test photos used to assess how a person comes across on camera before they are booked for a production.
- TFP Production and set
- TFP stands for Time for Prints: an unpaid shoot in which the model and photographer exchange their time for images, and both may use the photos as agreed.
- Token Marketing and platform
- A platform-specific currency on webcam sites that viewers buy with money and give to models, who can have them paid out at a fixed euro exchange rate.
- Trade Show Appearance Roles and formats
- An engagement at the booth of a production company, platform, or agency at a trade show, without sexual acts and with the aim of building contacts and visibility.
- Trade Tax Money and taxes
- A municipal tax on the profits of commercial businesses that affects performers only if they engage in commercial activity and exceed an allowance.
- Traffic-light code
- A three-step feedback system on set: green continue, yellow slower or a pause, red an immediate stop.
- Trailer Marketing and platform
- An edited preview film used by a production to promote a finished title, and often the most-viewed material from a shoot.
- Travel expenses Money and taxes
- Business-related costs for travel, accommodation, and meals incurred on the way to a shoot or casting, which may be reimbursed or deducted for tax purposes.
- Trusted person
- A person you trust who may accompany you to the casting or who, outside the industry, knows where you are.
- Tube Site Marketing and platform
- A freely accessible, ad-funded video platform for adult content that is both an advertising space and a frequent venue for unauthorized distribution.
U
- Unit Photography Production and set
- Unit photography consists of the photos taken alongside a video shoot and later used for the production’s cover, thumbnails, and advertising.
- Usage rights
- The permission you grant a production in the recordings, limited by period, territory and channels of publication.
V
- Vaccination protection Safety and consent
- Protection against certain infections built up through vaccinations, which serves on set as a supplement to testing and the condom requirement.
- VAT
- The tax on your services that you charge the client, remit to the tax office and offset against input VAT paid.
- VAT identification number Money and taxes
- A unique number for VAT-related transactions with companies in other EU member states, applied for through the Federal Central Tax Office.
- Video ID Verification Safety and consent
