Video Production

A production of moving images with sound, a larger team and a longer shooting day, paid at 400 to 1,200 euros per shooting day.

A production in which scenes are recorded as moving images with sound, usually from several camera positions and followed by post-production. Compared with a photo shoot, the team, equipment and time required increase, and sound adds a dimension that plays no role in photography.

What distinguishes a video shoot from a photo shoot

In video, you work in sequences, not poses. A scene consists of several shots repeated from different angles so that it can be edited later. For this, movements, lines of sight and positions must match in every repetition. Sound additionally requires quiet on set, a microphone on the body or on a boom, and occasional retakes simply because a car drove past outside.

The team typically includes a director, one or more cameras, lighting, sound, makeup and production management. The article A Shooting Day from Arrival to the End of the Workday shows what such a day looks like from arrival through breakdown.

Fee, duration and payment

A video production pays 400 to 1,200 euros per shooting day. The range is wider than for photos because the scope, role and rights vary more widely: a short supporting role with limited exploitation is at the lower end, while a substantial role with a far-reaching buyout is at the upper end. Payment is made by bank transfer within 14 days, never in cash.

The fee applies to the day, not to the minutes in the finished film. Waiting time, set changes and retakes are included. Clarify beforehand from what point additional hours will be paid and whether travel expenses will be reimbursed separately.

Also expect downtime. Between two scenes, the set is changed, lighting is reset and sound is checked. During this time, you remain available even if you are not currently needed. Something to read, water, a small snack and warm clothing for the breaks make these hours much more comfortable.

Documentation before the shoot

As soon as more than one person is in front of the camera, a reputable production requires all participants to provide a current STI panel that is no more than 14 to 30 days old on the shooting day. The production covers the costs. Verification of an identity card or passport and written consent are also mandatory. Condoms are mandatory without exception for vaginal and anal sex. The article Health on Set explains which tests are due and when.

What happens to the material after the shooting day

The raw footage goes into editing, is color-graded, mixed with sound and turned into different versions: the main version, a trailer and short excerpts. Each of these versions is a use that must be covered by the contract. Material that is not used does not disappear automatically; whether outtakes or Behind-the-Scenes footage may be published should be expressly regulated.

Your checklist before agreeing

Ask about the start of the shoot and the planned wrap time, the number of your scenes, the contact person on set and the scope of the usage rights. Compare the planned content with your Yes-No-Maybe list. Anything that is not marked Yes there will not be filmed.
