Chargeback
A reversal of a payment initiated by the cardholder through their bank, which platforms often deduct again from the Creator’s balance.
A chargeback is the reversal of a card payment initiated by the cardholder through their bank or card provider. The money is returned to the buyer, and the merchant from whom the purchase was made is charged. On platforms, this often means that revenue already credited to you is deducted again afterward.
How payment reversals happen
The procedure is intended to protect consumers, for example in cases of card misuse or undelivered goods. In the adult industry, additional motives come into play. Some buyers dispute a payment because the billing descriptor on the card statement was noticed in their shared household. Others want to receive the content and get their money back anyway. There are also payments made with stolen card details, where the genuine cardholder is right to request the reversal.
Payment service providers therefore classify the adult industry as a high-risk sector. This is one of the reasons platforms pay higher fees and retain a larger share of revenue, as reflected in the payout rate.
How it affects you
How a chargeback affects the Creator is governed by the terms of the respective platform. Three mechanisms are common:
- Reversal charge: The affected revenue is deducted from your balance, even if it has already been paid out. This can temporarily push the account into negative figures.
- Fees: Some platforms also pass on the fee charged by the payment service provider for processing the case.
- Withholding: Part of the earnings is withheld for a certain period to cover later chargebacks. This effectively extends the payout interval.
The issue does not matter for shoots for productions. The fee is agreed in advance, and Porno-Casting pays it to you by bank transfer within 14 days, regardless of how the production later sells its material.
Where you need to be especially careful
High individual amounts for customized services are most vulnerable. A Custom Video that you produce after payment can be charged back after delivery; the work is then lost. Process such orders exclusively through the platform’s payment function, not through private payment methods that customers may try to switch to. At least the platform’s protective mechanisms apply there, and you do not violate its rules.
Also document what was agreed and delivered: message history, delivery time, and access by the customer. Some platforms contest chargebacks with such evidence, while others do not. If chargebacks accumulate on an account, the platform may restrict or suspend it under its terms. More about operating your own channel can be found in the article Your own fan platform alongside shoots.
Keep your bookkeeping accurate
A chargeback reduces your income. What matters is what was actually paid out or charged back; the platform’s statements serve as evidence for this. Keep them in full and record chargebacks and fees separately so that the profit calculation is correct.
