Agency commission

The agency commission is the fee an agency receives for bringing a booking about: selecting suitable performers, matching dates, terms and contract, support up to the shoot day. What decides is not the amount, but who pays it.

Who gets the invoice

In serious placement the production pays. It is the agency’s client: it is looking for a cast, it commissions the search, it bears the costs. For applicants no costs arise — neither for inclusion in the file nor for placement, advice or processing. That applies even if in the end no booking comes about.

The commission is therefore part of the production budget, like location, technique or crew. It is not deducted from your fee. What is agreed between you and the production you receive in the agreed amount — the frames for that stand on the pay page.

The reason for this model is economic, not moral. An agency paid by productions earns only on bookings that actually come about. It therefore has the same interest as you: a matching cast instead of as many file entries as possible.

What unreliable models look like

Two variants are common and both are a hint of a different business model. The first: fees from the applicant. An admission fee, a file fee, a mandatory shoot for the Sedcard, a paid course or advice package. Anyone who earns their money from applicants does not need bookings but applicants — that shifts every incentive.

The second: a deduction from the fee. Here a commission is withheld, so that in the end less arrives than was negotiated. That is not automatically unlawful if it was agreed transparently, but it leads to a conflict of interest: the agency then earns on your work, not on its own performance towards the production.

What you ask before you work together

• Who pays the commission, and can that be confirmed in writing?
• Do costs arise for me at any point — including for photos, tests or travel?
• Do I receive the agreed fee in full, or is something withheld?
• Am I obliged to run future bookings through this agency? That concerns the exclusive contract and is to be assessed separately.

Looked at economically

A commission the production pays is tax-neutral for you: it appears neither in your income nor in your expenses. If something is deducted from your fee, by contrast, the gross amount is your income and the deduction an expense. Both then have to be visible in the bookkeeping, or the profit calculation is wrong.

In every case keep the booking confirmation, the contract and the payment proof. If questions arise, the payment chain is the only solid proof of who paid whom.
