Extra

A person visible in the background of a scene, without dialogue or an individual action, usually with a short period of work and a flat fee.

A person visible in the background of a scene, without dialogue, without an individual action and without being involved in the central scenes. Extras fill spaces: guests in a bar, passers-by, colleagues in an office, an audience at a party. In adult productions, they mainly appear in formats with a plot, such as feature productions or web series.

What the work involves

Extras are booked for individual scenes and are often only on set for a few hours. They receive brief instructions: where to stand, where to walk, when to talk to one another. There is no preparation involving learning lines, but patience is required because background scenes are repeated for every camera position and the movements must look the same each time. Waiting periods between scenes are also normal here.

Whether an extra is involved in scenes with nudity depends on the production. In many cases, extras appear exclusively in scripted scenes and remain fully clothed. What applies to you must be established before you agree, not on set.

Distinction from a supporting role

A supporting role has its own character, often dialogue and a part in the plot. An extra has none of these. The difference is not only artistic but also contractually relevant: if you were booked as an extra and are suddenly expected to perform dialogue, portray a character or take part in a scene with nudity on set, you are being pushed into a different role. That is a contract change and must be renegotiated.

Payment without a fixed industry rate

There is no generally applicable amount for extras. A flat fee or a half-day fee is often agreed because the work is shorter than a full shooting day. It is important that the amount is set out in writing before the date, as well as whether travel expenses will be reimbursed and what applies if the work runs longer than expected. Payment is made by bank transfer, not in cash.

Recognizable even in the background

The most common misconception is that someone standing only in the background cannot be recognized. In reality, you are clearly visible in many shots, and stills or trailers sometimes show exactly the scene in which you appear. Therefore, the same applies to extras as to all other participants: proof of age with an identity card or passport, a written contract, a declaration of consent and a Model Release regulating the use.

If you want to remain anonymous, you should say so beforehand. A production can place extras with their backs to the camera, out of focus or at the edge of the frame, but only if it knows. In this case, also ask not to appear in the foreground in stills or the trailer.

Before you agree

Ask which scenes you will appear in, what happens in the foreground of those scenes and how long you will be needed. Have the answers provided in writing. Working as an extra is a good way to get to know a set if the framework is clear beforehand.
