Set
The shoot site as a workplace with regulated access: who may be present during a take is an arrangement and not a question of courtesy.
Set means the area in which recording actually happens, including all the people who work there. The expression therefore does not mean the building, but the work zone: camera axis, light build, sound area and the space the performers occupy in front of the camera. Who may enter that zone is regulated.
The complement of a normal shoot day
On small productions four to six people are in the room; on larger ones ten and more. Typical are direction, camera, lights, sound, hair and makeup and production management, plus the performers. Each of those people has a task they have to do in that place.
Everyone else does not belong: acquaintances of the production, drivers, interns without a task, interested parties, potential funders. A set is not a place for spectators. That applies regardless of how casually someone is introduced.
Closed set for intimate scenes
A closed set means that during the take only the people technically strictly needed stay in the room. For intimate scenes that is the professional standard, not special treatment. In practice it means: monitors are moved outside, doors are closed, the crew waits outside the line of sight.
What remains as a rule is direction and camera, depending on the build one person for lights or sound. Everything else can be done from outside. The rest of the crew continues working, only in the next room — the process barely slows, which undercuts the most common counter-argument.
You insist on that with one sentence, and before the shoot day, not between two takes: “We shoot the intimate scenes on a closed set.” A serious production confirms that without discussion and writes it on the Call Sheet. If that is bargained over, you have gained an important piece of information about this production.
Rules that apply to everyone in the room
- No private recordings. Phones stay away, including the crew’s. What is filmed is filmed by the production.
- No entering during a running take. Doors stay shut until the pass is finished.
- Body contact only in the frame of the scene. Between takes the same forms of conduct apply as at any other workplace.
- A place to withdraw is mandatory. You have to be able to change and rest without being watched.
What you clarify on the first shoot day
Ask two things directly on arrival: who is in the room today, and who is the contact outside direction? The second question is the more important, because you need a point of contact that is not at the same time responsible for the process.
A trusted person you bring is expressly allowed at the casting; on the shoot itself it depends on the production and belongs discussed in advance. Which protection rules apply with us is on the safety page. The place itself, its booking and its suitability are a subject of their own: the Location.
