Spotting unreliable offers in five minutes

Recognising an unreliable model agency is not a question of gut feeling, but of ten features that can be checked in a few minutes. The erotic industry has a problem with providers who do not live from productions, but from the people who apply to them. They appear professional, have websites, logos and forms — and almost all of them make the same mistakes, because their business model forces them to. The list is sorted by force of statement: the first feature alone is enough for a refusal; the rest weigh in the sum.

Feature 1: you are meant to pay

Admission fee, file fee, photo shoot at your own cost, Sedcard creation, processing fee, seminar fee — in all variants the same sentence applies: a placement that takes money from the person placed does not earn on the placement. It earns on you.

That also destroys the incentive. As soon as you have paid, the provider’s turnover is there, whether you ever get a shoot day or not. How the payment actually runs is explained by the term agency commission: it comes from the client side. Who owes whom money in this chain is taken apart in the article who pays whom.

Watch the intermediate form: “free, but you first have to have a portfolio made by our partner photographer”. That is the same thing with a detour, and it remains so even if the photographer is good. The recognition mark is not the quality, but the duty: a photographer is recommended, not prescribed.

Features 2 to 4: what you check yourself in five minutes

2. No imprint or an incomplete one. In Germany full name, address, a contact route and, for registered companies, the register details are mandatory. If that is missing, either the work has been unprofessional, or nobody is meant to be reachable. Also check the firm in the commercial register — that takes two minutes and shows whether it exists and since when.

3. Contact only through a messenger. No company mail address, no fixed phone number, no website, only an account with a messenger service. That is not a company, but an account that can be deleted tomorrow. A free mail address that has nothing to do with the alleged company name fits that.

4. Evasive facts about the place. Address, people present, duration — simple questions with simple answers. As a measure: a casting happens in a studio or a booked location, at least three people are present, a companion may come without prior notice, and sexual acts do not belong. A private apartment without saying who else is there is not a shoot site.

Features 5 to 7: how money and time are talked about

5. No figures. If the answer to the question about the fee is not a figure but “we discuss that at the casting”, that is a warning sign. Ranges can be named by anyone who actually places, broken down by type of production and role. Which spans are usual in Germany is on our pay page — with that you place every offer, independently of whom it comes from.

6. Earnings promises. The opposite is just as suspicious: “several thousand euros a month are not unusual” or “a star in four weeks”. Anyone who promises an income without knowing your availability and the order book invents it. Such calculations name neither a period nor the shoot days needed for it.

7. Time pressure. “Only two places left”, “the casting is tomorrow”, “if you accept by this evening”. Pressure is the tool with which thinking is prevented. A production that really wants to cast you waits three days.

Features 8 to 10: contract, limits and tone

8. The contract only comes on set. Contracts are sent in advance, read and signed in peace. Anyone who puts the document in front of you only in the studio, when you have travelled and everyone is waiting, counts on you not reading. The same applies to annexes that are “supplied later”.

9. Limits are not discussed. A serious process starts with the question of what you do and what you do not, in writing and before the booking. If it does not come or is answered with “that will emerge then”, that is not an oversight. A solid Yes-No-Maybe list you can prepare independently of any provider. And if a named limit is answered with a supplement, it is for the provider not a no but a price.

10. The tone. The softest, but in practice the most reliable feature. If you are not addressed as a person who wants to work, but as goods, you recognise from that how work is done on set: compliments instead of facts, pet names instead of names, questions about private details that are needed for no booking.

What is not a warning sign

The other direction is just as important, because some things look threatening and are standard. Anyone who takes everything for suspicious ends up cancelling the serious dates as well.

  • ID and date of birth. Without documented age verification no production may be published; the enquiry is a duty, not curiosity. An ID-Shot in front of the camera is also usual on some productions.
  • An STI-Panel as a condition. That is the working basis of everyone involved and not an imposition.
  • Current, unedited photos. Without filter, without makeup, with a date: a normal basis for a cast. What is not normal is if nude shots become a condition for a first conversation, requested through a messenger by someone without an imprint.
  • A Buyout in the contract. The one-off settlement of all rights is industry standard and not a trap, but a clause you have to understand.

The four questions that replace a review

If ten features are too many, four questions in a mail are enough. The answers say more about a provider than any website.

  1. Who pays me, and how high is the day rate for this enquiry?
  2. What is the production company called, with full address?
  3. Can I have the contract by mail in advance?
  4. Who is present on the shoot day, and may I bring a companion?

These answers cost a minute of writing if they exist. Anyone who evades or postpones them to a phone call does not have them — and if you receive them in writing, you at the same time have a proof.

If you are already in it

If you have already paid or signed: a contract that came about under pressure or through deception is attackable. First secure all messages, contracts and payment proofs before you break off contact. Anyone who first deletes and then seeks advice no longer has a basis.

On payments already made a great deal hangs on the payment route. Direct debit and card payment can be reclaimed within deadlines, a transfer practically only with the recipient’s cooperation, a payment in cryptocurrency not at all. That is why the demanded payment method is itself a feature.

On blackmail attempts with picture material the rule is: do not pay, but report it. That is a criminal offence, and a payment does not, in experience, end it, but proves willingness to pay. Which steps in which order make sense is in the article on leaks and blackmail. For contract and payment questions the consumer advice centres advise independently; on coercion the police are competent.

And independently of whether you apply with us: if you are unsure whether an offer is serious, write to us. We look at it and tell you what we make of it, even if we have nothing to do with this production. That costs nothing and obliges you to nothing.

Note: This article places the practice in general terms and is not a substitute for legal advice in the individual case.
