A half-day fee is the fee for a shortened engagement, as a rule up to four or five hours on site. Productions use it when only a limited block is needed: a single photo set, a scene, a reshoot for a project that is otherwise finished.
Why half the time does not mean half the money
The effort on your side does not fall in proportion to the shoot time. Travel, preparation, hair and makeup and the return journey arise independently of whether you are on set for four or ten hours. What decides, though, is another point: the appointment blocks the day. Anyone who shoots in the morning rarely takes a second booking the same day.
A viable half-day fee therefore sits clearly above half the day rate, not at exactly half. The arguments for that are fixed effort and the blocked date — both can be justified on the facts and do not have to be worded as a demand.
When a half day fits both sides
There are engagements for which a full day makes no sense. A photo set with few motifs, a short interview block for extra material, a retake because a setup failed technically. On a first booking a half day is also sometimes set so that both sides get to know each other in a manageable frame.

When the half-day fee is a warning sign
It becomes critical if the scope of the shoot obviously does not fit the agreed time window. Typical constellation: a half day is booked, several scenes with rebuilds and costume changes are planned. Then the half-day fee is not an adjustment to a small booking, but a calculation that relies on your goodwill.
Equally telling is the contract: if at half the fee the same comprehensive usage rights are granted as for a full shoot day, the relation of performance and consideration is wrong. Exploitation does not care how long was shot.
What you watch when you accept
Put three points in writing: the time window with clock times, the scope of the planned recordings, and the rule for overrun. Usual is a supplement from a fixed time or the move to the full day rate. Without such a rule the day ends either in unpaid extra work or in a conflict on set that nobody needs.
