Anyone who wants to work as a man in erotic productions should know two sentences before he writes the first application: the market is clearly smaller than the one for female performers, and it is worse paid. That stands on hardly any casting site, because it is not good advertising. It changes nothing about the fact that productions continually look for male performers and that there are paths to shoot regularly in this field. Only they lead through other points than with women. What counts, how the fees sit and why most people stop too early stands here.
Why the market is smaller
Demand follows the audience, and the predominant part of productions places female performers at the centre. Male roles in many formats are laid out functionally: they carry the scene with, they do not carry it. The number of applications comes on top. For every male role clearly more applicants come than for a female cast — reliable figures for that do not exist for Germany, but the ratio is visible in the placement every month.
From many applicants and few roles the price follows. Male supporting roles in video productions sit at the lower edge of the usual span, meaning closer to 400 than to 1,200 euros per shoot day. The complete overview with all types of production is on our page on pay, the calculation after deductions in the article on what remains of the fee.
These figures are not an argument against the start, but one against a wrong plan. Anyone who reckons with replacing a job with four shoot days a month will not reach that. Anyone who plans the work as additional income beside a profession can run it for years.
What productions look for in men
The requirement profiles differ more strongly from the female ones than most people expect. Looks rarely stand in first place. These four points almost always do.
- Reliability. If a male role drops out, the scene stands still. Anyone who arrives on time, is prepared and keeps arrangements is therefore booked again faster than someone with a better presence and worse date morals.
- Physical reliability over the whole shoot day. The point about which least is spoken in application conversations, although it is the practically decisive one. Shooting happens in sections over many hours, with long interruptions, under artificial light, with strangers in the room. That is a different situation from any private one, and it is not solvable through motivation.
- Handling of waiting times. Between the shots light is reset, continuity checked, technique changed. Anyone who bridges this time quietly, without building pressure or entertaining the team, is gladly booked again.
- Discretion. What happens on set, who was there, which performer was booked — none of that goes outward. A single screenshot in a chat group ends a collaboration for good.
What almost never stands in these profiles: muscle mass, height, a certain age. There are enquiries for very slim and for sturdy performers, for twenty-year-olds and for men over fifty. Anyone who believes they first have to train for half a year postpones the application for the wrong reason.
The realistic entry paths
There are essentially three. The first leads through supporting roles in video productions: a small share of the scene, lower fee span, in return experience on set and a reference that can be pointed to next time.
The second leads through photo productions. They are shorter, more technical and for the start often more pleasant, because less hangs on timing. The span sits at 250 to 600 euros per shoot day.
The third path is as a couple. If you want to shoot with a partner, you change your market position considerably, because couple constellations are sought in their own right. That brings its own questions that have to be settled beforehand — there is a separate article on that in this series.
Why most people give up after a few enquiries
A typical course: application sent, conversation held, two refusals received, after six weeks nothing more heard, subject closed. That rarely lies in someone being unsuitable. It lies in the expectation having been calibrated wrongly.
Reckon with months, not with weeks. Male casts often run through recurring contacts: a production that has already worked well with someone asks that person again instead of casting newly. Exactly that is why the first shoot is the hardest and the third clearly easier.
The second reason for the early stops is the kind of refusals. They come without an explanation, because a production rarely reasons why it decided for someone else. That reads like a judgement of the person and is as a rule a decision about a role that had to fit a cast already set.
What helps in this waiting time: stay available, do not comment on refusals, be able to accept short-notice enquiries. Anyone who can accept within two hours an enquiry for the next working day overtakes applicants with better photos.
How supporting roles become recurring bookings
The transition does not happen through a better Sedcard, but through the impression you leave on set. Concretely: you know the process, you do not have to have anything explained, you bring what is needed, and after ten hours you are still the same person as in the morning. How such a day looks is in our article on the shoot day from arrival to wrap.
From the point at which a production books you for the third time the bargaining position also changes. Not dramatically, but measurably: better dates, longer lead time, occasionally a lead role. About the fee there is then room to talk, beforehand hardly.
What you should settle before the application
First the question of visibility. Male performers in scenes are often less prominent in the picture, but that does not protect from being identified. What is technically possible and what is not is in the article on working anonymously.
Second the question of money. If you want to replace a monthly income with this work, the calculation as a man is even tighter than for female performers. As additional income beside a profession it adds up; as a main source in the first years realistically not.
Third the question of motivation. Anyone who starts because they expect sex from it will be disappointed — it is work that happens technically, slowly and observed. Anyone who reckons with that has the decisive advantage. The application costs nothing, and we answer within 48 hours, even if we refuse.
