As a couple in front of the camera: what you need to settle beforehand

Couples are in demand in erotic productions because an existing familiarity is hard to stage in front of the camera. We receive enquiries for couple pairings regularly, and they are harder to cast than single bookings. Anyone who wants to shoot porn as a couple therefore has a good starting position — and an extra need for clarification that individuals do not have. The difficult questions do not concern the shoot day itself, but what comes after: contracts, money, different limits and the case that a relationship ends while the material continues. These points belong before the first application, because afterwards they can no longer be settled in peace.

Two contracts, two fees

Even if you are booked together, each of you signs your own contract and issues your own invoice. That is not a formality. It means that each of you grants your own rights, has your own duties and can in case of doubt object independently.

Separate also means: each of you can decline independently. If one of the two contracts is not signed, the booking for that person falls away and not automatically for both. That sounds technical and is the most important protective function of the whole construction.

The money runs just as separately. Each of you receives your fee in your own account; each of you taxes your own profit. A joint payment to one person is the wrong path in tax and legal terms, even if you keep a joint pot. Payment is made within 14 days by bank transfer with a statement, not in cash on set.

In practice that also means: the fees can be different. On video productions the range is 400 to 1,200 euros per shoot day, and how the roles sit within that depends on visibility and share, not on relationship status. Anyone who knows that beforehand does not argue about it later. Which clauses matter in both contracts is in the article on the model contract clause by clause.

What happens to the material if you separate

The question nobody wants to ask before the first shoot, and the most important of all. The answer is uncomfortable: a separation changes nothing about usage rights already granted. A published scene stays online even if you are no longer together six months later.

To understand this: a separation is not a ground for withdrawal. Contracts on usage rights are effective independently of private circumstances, and the production has invested in the exploitation. The end of a relationship is not an event for it.

A withdrawal is possible only within narrow limits, and it would have to be supported by both of you — which after a separation is rarely the case. If one of you wants deletion and the other does not, you face a conflict that the contract decides, not the feeling.

There are two ways to lower the risk. First: limit the usage rights from the start in time and territory, instead of granting an unlimited worldwide release. That usually lowers the fee, but it shortens the time in which the footage is officially distributed. Second: talk through together beforehand how you would handle the material if you were separated. Anyone who cannot give that answer should postpone the shoot.

Two limits lists, not one

Each of you fills in your own yes-no-maybe list, and you do it separately, without consulting and without the other looking. Only then do you compare. The reason is simple: limits rarely match, and a jointly filled list ends up showing the limits of the more assertive person.

Count on the lists differing, and do not treat that as a problem. Different limits are the normal case, even after ten years together. What comes up at the kitchen table does not have to be settled on set.

What applies when the lists diverge: the tighter one. Always. What one of you excludes does not take place — not even if the other wants it, not even for a surcharge. This rule has to stand before the first booking, not when the question has become concrete.

The list is part of the contract with us and is on set. How it is built is in the article on the yes-no-maybe list; which protection rules apply on set is on our page on safety on set.

If only one of you is booked

This case occurs more often than the joint booking, and it is the second large strain. A production is looking for a particular pairing and only needs one of you. Or you apply as a couple, and for months the enquiries come only for one side.

Settle three things beforehand. First: may each of you shoot individually, and if so, in what framework? Second: does the other have to be informed beforehand, or does a general consent apply? Third: what happens if only one of you is booked regularly and the other is not — does the relationship hold?

In experience the harder part is not the individual booking itself, but the inequality over months. Anyone who is asked regularly gains routine, contacts and a sense of ease; anyone who is not asked sits beside it. Talk about it before it happens, not afterwards.

The most honest variant is the written one: a short text that you both sign, stating what is allowed individually. That sounds excessive and in practice saves exactly the discussion that otherwise comes after the first individual booking.

Scenes with third parties

Many enquiries for couples concern exactly that. That is why this question belongs before the first application and not on set. More than yes or no has to be settled: which acts with third parties are possible, with whom, in which pairing, who is present, and what is excluded?

In practice it has proved useful to write these points into the individual limits lists rather than into a joint understanding. Then they are part of the contract and not the memory of a conversation. Independently of that, on set: condoms are required for vaginal and anal intercourse, without exception and regardless of any tests on file.

If one of you is unsure on this subject, the answer is no — not maybe. Uncertainty before the shoot does not get smaller on set.

What should stand before the application

Five points, short and in writing: separate contracts and fees accepted, handling of the material in case of a separation discussed, two own limits lists drawn up, a rule for individual bookings agreed, a position on scenes with third parties settled.

Once that is in place, the joint application is straightforward: you apply individually and note in the free-text field that you are available as a couple. You come to the conversation together, but we also speak with each of you alone — precisely because some limits sound different in the partner’s presence.
