Lead role
The role that carries a production: longest engagement on set, highest visibility in the finished material and the fee in the upper part of the span.
The role that carries a production: it sits at the centre of the action, is longest in the picture and determines how the finished material works. Anyone who takes a lead role usually works through the complete shoot day, is recorded more often in repeats and is recognisable in almost every setup.
Why the shoot day becomes longer
A supporting figure is shot in two or three blocks and is then finished. The lead role is in almost every setup, including repeats that become necessary because of light, sound or continuity. The day runs from hair and makeup to wrap.
On top of that comes the share hardly anyone plans before the first shoot: waiting time. Between two setups there is a rebuild, measuring and new lighting. You spend those hours on set, and they are part of what the day rate is paid for. How such a day is concretely distributed is described in our article on a shoot day from arrival to wrap.
Where the fee sits
On video productions the day rate moves between 400 and 1,200 euros, on photo productions between 250 and 600 euros. Lead roles usually sit in the upper part of these spans. The difference is not a bonus for prominence, but pays three concrete things: more hours on set, more visibility in the result and usually more widely drawn usage rights.
Payment with us is within 14 days by transfer; there is no cash. The full ranges and the deductions that still come off them stand on the pay page.
The face is usually part of the booking
A lead role without a recognisable face is the exception. Productions cast it precisely because they need a face that carries the action and later appears on covers, in preview images and in the promotion of the title. If anonymity is a condition for you, the lead role is the wrong start; the supporting role can be secured far more easily.
Marketing material is legally a use of its own. It has to stand in the contract and in practice is usually settled as a lump through a Buyout. Which paths there are for still keeping your own face out, and where those paths end, is in the article on working anonymously.
Five questions before you accept
Ask first about the planned wrap, not only about the start. Second about how many scenes are intended for you. Third whether face shots are mandatory or whether there are setups without a face.
Fourth: for which channels and which territory do the usage rights apply, and is marketing material included? Fifth: is the day rate fixed, or does it hang on a number of scenes shot? A serious production answers all five points in writing before the signature. Anyone who evades thereby already supplies the answer.
What a lead role is not
It is not a condition for a career and not a proof of skill. Many experienced performers deliberately work mainly in smaller roles, because the shoot days are shorter, the load is lower and the exploitation stays more manageable. The lead role brings the highest fee of a single day, but it asks for that the largest share of time, visibility and rights.
