Supporting role

A time-limited engagement with less picture share, usually in the lower part of the fee span and often the first path into a production.

An engagement that covers only part of the action and accordingly only claims part of the shoot day. Supporting roles are shot in one to three blocks, often within a few hours, and stand clearly shorter in the picture in the finished material than the leading role.

The engagement is shorter, the preparation is not

The most widespread error: a small role means little effort. Travel, hair and makeup, briefing, contract signature and ID check arise just as they do on every other booking. What falls away are the hours in front of the camera, not the hours around them.

The Call Sheet says from when you are needed and when your part ends. Rely on those times, but plan a buffer: if the shoot plan shifts, what sits at the back shifts first.

What is paid

Billing follows the same spans as every other booking: 400 to 1,200 euros per video day, 250 to 600 euros per photo day. Supporting roles usually sit at the lower edge. Some productions bill them as a half-day fee if the engagement actually stays under half a day.

What decides is that the basis stands beforehand: full day, half day or a lump sum for a set number of setups. If the shoot is delayed and you stay longer than agreed, it has to be settled whether and how that time is billed. The ranges for all production types stand under pay.

Why the start usually happens here

Productions rarely cast leading roles with people they have never worked with. A supporting role is the usual way to show yourself: a short engagement, a manageable risk for both sides, real set experience for you.

What is assessed is almost never the performance in front of the camera, but the conduct around it. Punctuality, reachability in advance, reliable facts on the Sedcard, patience during waiting times and the ability to play a setup the fifth time the same as the first. Anyone who brings that stands on the list for the next project without having to apply again.

The underestimated advantage: repeat bookings

Economically a series of supporting roles is often better than a single large booking. Four shorter shoot days in a year bring more than one highly paid day, and they spread the risk: if one production falls away, the whole year does not fall away.

There is also a point that only becomes important later: less picture share means less material that stays permanently in circulation. Anyone who professionally or privately depends on restraint has the better starting position with smaller roles. What is technically possible there is placed in the article on working anonymously.

What you should watch

Have the number of scenes and the planned time frame given in writing. A booking offered as a supporting role that on the shoot day suddenly fills the whole day is no longer a supporting role, but a contract change — and that is renegotiated, not silently accepted. Report such shifts at once to your contact, not only after the shoot.
