A recording form in which the camera takes the viewpoint of a person involved instead of observing the action from outside. In most cases it is operated by that person themselves — from the hand, with a harness or with a mount fixed to the body.

Camera and performance in one hand

That is the decisive production particularity: anyone who operates the camera is performing at the same time. Frame, focus and movement arise on the side, without anyone being able to correct from outside. That is why this form is repeated more often than in classically broken-down scenes, and a take fails more often on technique than on performance.

Direction works accordingly differently. It cannot look through the viewfinder, but gives instructions over a monitor or orally between takes. If you hold the camera yourself, you are jointly responsible for part of the picture design, even if no prior experience is expected for that.

What that asks of you in front of the camera

Line of look and movement follow other rules than usual. Instead of playing past the camera, you align yourself directly on the lens. The distance is small, often only an arm’s length, and movements have to be executed more slowly and more controlled, or the picture becomes unusable.

For the camera-operating side physical load comes on top: holding a camera still in one position for a long time is tiring. Plan breaks and say so if the arm no longer keeps up. A shaky take costs more time than a short interruption.

Small crew, short build

Because a separate camera position falls away, these productions work with few people, often in the order of a solo shoot. That shortens the build and makes the days more predictable. It changes nothing about the billing: the regular day rates of 400 to 1,200 euros in video apply, paid within 14 days by transfer, to be read under pay.

Two sides, two answers on anonymity

For the camera-operating person this form is one of the most anonymous of all: usually only excerpts are visible; the face almost always stays outside the picture. Anyone who professionally depends on restraint finds a workable option here.

For the person in front of the camera the opposite applies. The closeness to the lens and the direct look into it make the face clearly more recognisable than in a normally broken-down setup. Clarify before you accept

Ask which of the two positions is intended for you, how long shooting runs in one stretch, and whether a mount is supplied. The answers differ more than the shared format name suggests.
