Cut

Cut is the command that ends a running take. It is spoken aloud, everyone holds still, the camera stops. The word is so short and international because it has to be understood at once in every situation — including by crew members who are not looking.

Direction ends the take

In the normal case the command comes from direction when a take is in the can or something did not fit. After that there is usually a short announcement of how it continues: once more, a new setup, or a break. That is pure process organisation and happens dozens of times on a shoot day.

Two things are to be distinguished. “Cut” ends the running take, nothing more. Only the announcement after that says whether the scene is finished. As long as nothing is said, the position is in doubt held, because shooting can continue immediately.

And you can stop at any time

This is the more important part of this entry: the right to end a take does not sit with direction alone. Every performer can stop a running take at any time — at once, without warning and without a reason.

There are two established routes for that. A Safeword is a word agreed beforehand that stops the shoot at once; it is deliberately chosen so that it never falls by chance in a scene. The traffic-light code works in steps: yellow means slower or a check-in, red means an immediate stop. Both are fixed before the first take and told to the whole crew, not only to direction.

If none of that was agreed, the spoken “Cut” or “Stop” applies just as much. A crew that does not react to that at once is not working seriously — that is not a question of experience or haste, but a basic rule.

What happens afterwards

After a stop by you there is no bargaining and no asking why. Usual is: take off, robe or blanket, a drink, a quiet place. Only then does production management clarify whether and how shooting continues.

A stop is not a breach of contract and not a reason to cut your fee. The right to stop belongs to the contract, not against it. Material already shot first stays; whether it may be used follows from the consent given and from whether you maintain it.

Fix it before the first take

Clarify three points before the camera runs for the first time:

1. Which word or code applies and whether the whole crew knows it.
2. What applies if you cannot speak — an agreed hand signal or two knocks.
3. Who is available after a stop, and specifically someone other than direction.

These three questions take two minutes and change the statics of the whole shoot day. A production that answers them prepared has thought the subject through before you — that too is usable information about your client.
