Right to stop

The right to stop is the right to end a running shoot at any time — regardless of how much has already been shot, how many people are waiting, and whether a contract has been signed. It follows directly from the fact that consent to sexual acts can be withdrawn at any time.

It is therefore not a concession a production grants or refuses, but the basis on which shooting may happen at all. A clause that tries to exclude stopping changes nothing about that.

When the fee stays

In practice a distinction is drawn by the reason, and the distinction is fairer than it first sounds.

• The production departs. Something is demanded that was not agreed, or a point on the No-List is touched. The full day rate stays with you.
• Health reasons. Circulation, pain, an injury on set. Usual is the full or a pro-rata fee, depending on how far the day had progressed.
• You stop without fault on the production’s side. Everything ran as agreed; you still do not want to continue. Stopping remains your right. Economically, what has been shot up to then is usually billed pro rata.

What matters is that these three cases are regulated in the contract before the shoot. If nothing stands there, the argument happens at the worst moment — after the stop.

Stopping does not make anyone unprofessional

The widespread worry is that a stop will travel through the industry and end the bookings. The reverse is closer: anyone who names a limit clearly and ends the day behaves predictably. Unpredictable is anyone who continues in silence and is no longer reachable weeks later.

Productions budget for stops. They are annoying, they cost time, they happen. What productions actually fear are people whose limits they do not know.

What the set’s reaction reveals

The moment after a stop is the most honest information about a production you can get. A set that works stops the work, settles the billing and ends the day without reproach.

A set that treats the stop as a problem is working with pressure. The signals are recognisable: references to the costs, to the waiting crew, to future bookings that depended on it. How you stop

Short and without justification. One sentence is enough: I am stopping here. Then get dressed and leave the shooting area. You do not discuss the reason in a robe and not in front of the crew.

Then contact your agency and, if you have left one, your trusted person. Write down the same day what happened.
